From Pastor Clayton's Journal Week of 4/15/24
In Deuteronomy 7-9, God is once again preparing the Israelites for the journey and battles that are ahead. Their time outside of the land promised to their ancestors is almost over and they will soon enter this good and beautiful land. But doing so will be no easy task. Ahead of them are enemies much greater than a small Israelite army. When the tribes sent spies into this land in an earlier chapter, the majority of the spies were terrified because there stood these tall, and mighty warriors that they believed they had no chance against. And here they are, on the cusp of running into these great warriors face to face. But in these chapters, God reassures his people with a word of comfort, they won’t go at this alone. God has promised this land to his people and he will drive out their enemies no matter how big or strong they may seem.
Along with this word of comfort though comes a reminder in Deuteronomy 9. Don’t forget why this is all happening. Don’t forget the one who makes all things happen. God makes it clear that isn’t because the Israelites are righteous that they will receive this new home. They didn’t do something to earn it. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! They are a stiff-necked people who have turned from God for most of this journey. All of this will happen because when God makes a promise, a covenant, with his people he is faithful to see it to completion. And we see this idea explained in Deuteronomy 7:7-8, “It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath he swore to your fathers, that the LORD had brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery.” All the things to come, all the provisions that Israel has experienced in the past and will experience in the coming days hangs on one thing alone, the LORD loves them. How sweet of a thing it is to know that all the good things we receive aren’t a reflection of how good we are, if that were the case we’d be out of luck, but because God loves his people and is faithful in that love even when they make a mess of things. And even though this was a promise made to a specific group of people who lived thousands of years before us, we know that it still rings true today. All the good we experience is rooted in a God who loves us even when we don’t love him back. No example of this faithful, loving, promise keeping is greater than to know that the Father sent his Son to die for undeserving people in order that they can have eternal life. All that we have, all that we look forward to hangs on one constant theme that we see throughout the Bible, God’s love for us. What an incredible thing it is to know that we are loved by God and just how deeply that love runs is too great for us to understand. God was faithful in love then and he is today. |
